Caring for the Surrounding Environment

Preserving and ensuring the safety of the surrounding environment is a top priority for the Jordan Phosphate Mines Company (JPMC). The company takes all necessary precautionary measures to protect all elements of the environment from potential risks in compliance with globally recognized environmental standards.
As a leading manufacturer in the fields of fertilizer production and mining, we are fully aware of the significant responsibility we bear in conserving the environment and safeguarding the natural resources that are fundamental to our operations. In a resource-rich country like Jordan, with its abundant reserves of phosphate and other minerals essential to the mining sector, we have a strategic opportunity to establish a sustainable plan that ensures the optimal use of these resources for the long term. Through the prudent management of these resources, we aim to bolster our market position, align with global sustainability trends, and meet the aspirations of investors and environmentally conscious consumers. Our commitment to sustainable mining and extraction practices plays a crucial role in preserving the quality and longevity of natural resources.
We strive to minimize the environmental impact of our operations, supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy and promoting sustainable water management. This is achieved through the adoption of advanced technologies and a steadfast commitment to environmental protection as an integral part of our core values. We adhere to international standards and environmental procedures to safeguard natural resources, including surface and groundwater, ensuring their optimal use. Additionally, we place special emphasis on protecting the unique marine environment in the Gulf of Aqaba, particularly its coral reefs.
Our Vision for the Future

A Quick Overview Of Our Efforts

At JPMC, we understand that the sustainability of our business is closely linked to the health of the environment in which we operate. Our continued success depends on our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship. By applying global best practices and aligning our operations with international environmental standards, the company, represented by the Industrial Complex, has achieved the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System certification.

Reducing Carbon Emissions

Reducing Carbon Emissions

In pursuit of achieving Zero Carbon Emissions, JPMC has transitioned all furnaces and steam boilers at the industrial complex to operate on natural gas (LNG) instead of heavy fuel oil and diesel.
Reducing Phosphate Emissions

Reducing Phosphate Emissions

The company has implemented multiple measures to reduce air pollution caused by phosphate dust during unloading and loading operations. Among these measures are dust control systems, such as dust removal systems used during truck unloading and phosphate loading at the export port.
Water Conservation

Water Conservation

The Aqaba Industrial Complex adopts an innovative zero liquid discharge system, whereby all wastewater generated from industrial processes is reused for various purposes, such as fertilizer production and equipment cooling. In addition, the water used in the phosphate washing process is treated and recycled within the washers at the Shidya Mine, thereby contributing to the reduction of water waste.
Energy Conservation

Energy Conservation

The Industrial Complex harnesses thermal energy from chemical reactions, particularly those involving sulfuric acid, to generate steam. This steam is then used to operate the company's electricity generation facilities, producing up to 245 megawatts of electricity daily.
Biodiversity Enhancement

Biodiversity Enhancement

JPMC is implementing a project to re-green the gypsum hill at the Aqaba Industrial Complex. This project serves as an optimal solution for managing phosphate industry waste and aims to enhance tourism in Aqaba by creating tourist attractions and recreational spaces, thus opening new investment opportunities in the tourism sector.
Closure and Rehabilitation

Closure and Rehabilitation

In a step towards restoring environmental balance, the company rehabilitated the phosphate hills at the Ruseifa Mine after its closure. This included removing obstacles and visual distortions and transforming the area into parks and recreational spaces, which helped reduce emissions and pollutants.
Combating Desertification

Combating Desertification

The company has adopted an initiative to plant extensive greenery within its mines, including areas surrounding buildings, using fruit-bearing and non-fruit-bearing trees. This effort contributes to combating desertification and improving the local environment.
